Bangalore, India

Bangalore-based Shilpa Alexander graduate from JJ School of Art, Mumbai and a post graduate in animation & film design from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. She has done full justice to both her degrees as she practices her art and, at the same time, is associated with the film industry. Shilpa is balancing both her acquired talents to perfection by being an amateur artist and an associate director in the Malayalam film industry. She has just completed four films and loves painting for it helps her release her emotions.

She has performed in varied capacities as a pre-production designer, graphic designer, visualiser and infographic designer with many design companies. From 2013, she started working in the film industry and has had a chance to be associated with National Award winning movie ‘North 24 Kaatham’ by Anil Radhakrishnan Menon and donned the cap of an associate director in ‘Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi’ by Anil Radhakrishnan Menon and Anuraaga Karikkin Vellam by Khalid Rahman.

Shilpa dreams of directing a film of her own someday. She mentions of her artistic statement, “I first have a thought - it could be something I read or heard or seen. From that I get an idea for a painting. As I draw it evolves into the final image. I like the darker side of life...the pleasure within the pain.”

Summarizing the technique that she uses to create her works, she says, “I use a gel pen on cartridge paper. The texture that this medium gives is so raw and amazing. It is like a poem.”
