Hiranyagarbha (Golden Egg) Ankon Mitra

In Stock

Artist's Statement: Hiranyagarbha, the poetic 'golden womb' or 'golden egg' in Sanskrit, is the source of the created Universe or the manifested cosmos in Indian philosophy. The word finds mentions in many shlokas and specifically in one hymn of the ?igveda (RV 10.129.1) which is known as the 'Hiranyagarbha S?kta'. Before all conception, the cosmos was not even present. Brahman, all pervading consciousness alone occupied the Universe. This was a state of formlessness and namelessness. All of a sudden the passive Brahman, pure consciousness, desired to be numerous. Therefore, he instigated the course of creation of forms and names. Thus came into being the germ-seed of creation, the Hiranyagarbha. In this work, the centrepiece is a tiny golden egg, enfolded tightly within itself. Surrounding it is world that will manifest itself wave upon wave, from within the folds of the egg - a world of energy, form, myriad colours, ideas, time and names.
